Next to Normal, the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, which recently opened at Albuquerque's Desert Rose Playhouse, carries as great an emotional wallop as any play I've seen in New Mexico in 40 years, and the power keeps on roiling throughout two long acts. The Desert Rose Playhouse goes out on a limb with this production, and it succeeds. The tension is built and broken in perfect time, and the intimate space adds to the energy. If you are a lover of dark comedy, difficult relationships, and uncomfortable situations, go see this show. It's a wild ride."

The singing voices aim to embody the emotions with no showboating. The beauty of the voice—and there is strong singing here—takes a backseat to the ability to deliver the heightened or crushing emotions of the moment. This is an absolutely lovely production. -- Rob Spiegel, Talkin' Broadway
I once again commend the Desert Rose Playhouse for bringing another strong new play to Albuquerque theatregoers." -- Rob Spiegel, Talkin' Broadway

“Next to Normal” is groundbreaking and emotional powerhouse of a musical which addresses contemporary issues of trauma, loss, the meaning of family and the stigma and treatment of mental illness.
It won three Tony Awards in 2009 including Best Original Score for its surging rock music and the Pulitzer Prize in 2010; when awarding the prize, the Pulitzer Board called it “a powerful rock musical that grapples with mental illness in a suburban family and expands the scope of subject matter for musicals”.
Though a work of fiction the issues showcased in “Next to Normal” are quite real and often closer to our own lives than we think.
